The city is smoking

The decision to prevent smoking inside public buildings, public transportation, and semi-public restaurants and cafés has caused all smokers to go outside these places to smoke their cigarettes. These smoking breaks usually last between five and ten minutes, depending on whether there is only one smoker or a group of them, and they often have their own social aspects. Because the breaks are short, they usually take place directly in front of the entrances.

The areas where people have to enter and leave any public building or space are therefore strongly connected with smoking. This new character of our public places shows the failure of the policymakers. Instead of reducing the effect of smoking on non-smokers in society, they have concentrated smoking in one narrow zone that everyone must pass through. We see this in hospitals, universities, train stations, and many other public and private places.
